European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
